my new year resolution

Are you in? What are your new year’s resolutions?

Each day I get more & more excited about the wonderful things I have to share with you here on my blog, and today is certainly no exception. My long-time Twitter friend {we go way back, in Twitter years} Sarah Copeland { or as I like to call her @edibleliving } of blog edible living  has just come out with a brand new cookbook and it could not be more fabulous.

If you know me, you know I’m a sucker for a good clean design and great photography with a rustic edge, and The Newlywed Cookbook captures the aesthetic to a point of perfection. I have a terrible addiction to collecting cookbooks and ones of this look line my shelves just begging me to use them. What I love about this book is the effortlessness each recipe seems to embody. It’s an approach to cooking through great ingredients that is simple, to the point of being completely divine. One fabulous dish after the other; recipes you will actually make over and over again.

I believe the book to be a great reflection of Sarah, who is always upbeat and has a fabulously optimistic and generous outlook on life. In our communications, she is always sure to mention her family and ask about mine, which is so thoughtful and lovely for everyone.

I can only imagine her little Greta cooking by her side! Her past work with Food Network and Good Food Gardens also shines through, with a consistent theme surrounding healthy eating and the “cooks garden.” I love the concept and do hope for my very own garden to actually have some success *this* year!

brunchOne of my most favorite entertaining stories is that of the Ladies Sunday Brunches that I used to host. Always prepared with the staple items on hand, I’d extend the standing monthly invitation to my friends, and to any friends they wished to bring.

Each person would be in charge of bringing one dish – some would bring mimosas and bloody mary’s, while others came with frittas and quiches, salads & fruits, desserts & muffins & breads galore!

A wonderful way to meet new ladies, taste new recipes and entertain. Best of all, everyone is involved in the experience and feels a part of the brunch by bringing their own dish to share. My only request is that each person share their special recipe. The day after, I always send a “thanks for coming” email and share the collection of new recipes with the group to try their own hand and making some of the new delights!

A very special treat for me today. In going through the wonderful stacks of family recipes in my collection, I found this little gem.

This is likely my very first handwritten recipe card, stashed in Mom’s most revered recipe book. I remember making the Special K cookies in Girl Scounts, troop #74 back in elementary school and bringing home the recipe to share. Apparently I learned to cook before I learned to spell!

For me, a hilarious but exciting treat to share.

As we mentioned, our mission is to help you “preserve your heritage.” A perfectly suited recipe for such a topic is Nana’s Strawberry Jam & Preserved Strawberries. With fresh strawberries in stock at every market in town, local fields are chalked full of people lined up with their families ready to “pick their own” baskets full of strawberries. A perfect way to pass a summer day is spent in the cool kitchen, making jars of Strawberry Jam to be enjoyed all year long.

Just as strawberries can be preserved, so too can the heritage of your own family. Our IceMilk Aprons are build around this notion. Each Gift Package includes our signature Heirloom Kit, perfectly packaged in a traditional glass jam jar, just as you’d use for canning. Let the preservation begin!
