The Best Toffee Bar Recipe

The Best Toffee Bar Recipe

There’s something about a handwritten recipe card that instantly transports me to my grandmother’s kitchen—flour dusted on the counter, something sweet in the oven, and the comfort of tradition baked into every bite. This best toffee bar recipe is one of those timeless treats. It’s buttery, crisp, chocolatey, and just the right amount of sweet. And best of all? It’s easy to make and even easier to love.

Toffee bars have become a staple in our family—whether it’s a holiday dessert, an after-school surprise, or a little something wrapped up in wax paper and shared with a neighbor. It’s a recipe that’s been passed around, written and rewritten, and one that I hope you’ll pass down too.

I think this might be one of my favorite all-time recipes in my cookbook, The Heirloomed Kitchen.

  • Author: Heirloomed Collection

Description

These toffee bars are the perfect balance of salty and sweet.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 14oz can sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1oz unsweetened chocolate
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 3 tsp vanilla

Instructions

  1. Cream butter or margarine, 1/2 cup sugar and salt together. Add in flour.
  2. Pat mixture in to 13×9 inch pan.
  3. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes until light brown.
  4. While baking, mix together the condensed milk, butter and salt in a sauce pan until butter melts.
  5. Stir and cook over medium heat for 5 minutes until the mixture thickens and becomes smooth. Stir in 2 tsp of vanilla.
  6. Spread mixture over the baked layer and bake again at 350 for 12-15 minutes or until golden.
  7. Best when just slightly undercooked!
  8. Melt chocolate and 2 tbsp butter and add in 1 1/2 cups sugar and 1 tsp vanilla. Blend with 2 tbsp hot water.
  9. Spread frosting over bars while still warm and cut into bar shapes.

These classic toffee bars are a crowd-pleaser, and they hold up beautifully for gifting or storing. I always keep the ingredients on hand for when we need a little sweet pick-me-up, especially around the holidays.
