I grew up so close to food – from family dinners and Sunday suppers, to making all things homemade with my grandmother, it’s no secret that these made-from-scratch moments have shaped who I am. For me, my inspiration is drawn from very notable marks – splattered recipe cards, stained from ingredients of well-loved recipes that my family members have made over and over again. I just love using old recipes that have been passed down from my great grandmother and grandmothers collections on to me and showing my own children the importance of these traditions.
I treasure every recipe card in my collection, down to each and every splatter they hold from use. Today I chose to make my Grandmother’s Classic Chocolate Cake, an all-time family favorite. I used my KitchenAid Stand Mixer, a product like no other, to bring this recipe to life. And, as you’ll notice if you’ve followed along here for any amount of time, I use it time and time again in my own kitchen.

While baking an entree cake from scratch my seem daunting, I promise you it is one of the desserts that is totally worth it. I love nothing more than seeing my kitchen counter covered in chocolate splatters or flour. Now I know something yummy is being made! This easy Chocolate Cake recipe will have you feeling like a pro in no time.
Homemade Chocolate Cake Recipe
This easy chocolate cake recipe is the perfect cake to make from scratch. Top it with our classic chocolate buttercream frosting for an unforgettable treat.
- 2 cups brown sugar
- 1/2 cup butter
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 cup sour milk
- 1/2 hot water
- 1/2 cup cocoa
- 2 cups flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp soda
- 1tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp vanilla
- Start by creaming the sugar and butter together, adding in the egg yolks. Then mix cocoa and hot water, and let cool. Next add sugar into the mixture.
- Begin adding sugar to the mixture. Next, add flour and dry ingredients alternately with sour milk.
- Lastly add whites of eggs, beaten stiffly. Bake in moderate oven for 35-40 minutes.
