What is a capsule wardrobe? I’ve teamed up with a local stylist, Leigh Williams of L. Williams Closet Edit, to compile an amazing Capsule Wardrobe for Women. We updated some pieces in my closet, and got some new pieces to style with old ones. A capsule wardrobe checklist helped keep me on track with what I needed to refresh and I’m sharing some ideas on how to build capsule wardrobe outfits. Learn more about our process below.
What is a Capsule Wardrobe?
This year I decided that I wanted my signature personal style to be better defined as my own personal brand but I know I couldn’t tackle this one on my own. I wanted to add a few new pieces to my wardrobe, but I was having a hard time picking them out on my own and pulling them all together. Sticking to a minimalist capsule wardrobe is my thing and I even have a little Capsule Wardrobe checklist in my head for ensuring I stick to the essentials. I love neutrals, rarely do color, adore things that mix + match, but it is fun to bring in some new pieces once in a while.
I teamed up with a local stylist and closet editor located here in Atlanta, GA to help me through this process. Leigh Williams and I used to be neighbors and I knew she would totally nail what I was trying to do here. She was able to completely get my vision and suggest some great new pieces for me as well. She then put together a few outfits from these pieces for me to try, and made the whole process so fun + easy.
Capsule Wardrobe for Women
When I talk about a Capsule Wardrobe approach to your closet, many people ask “What is a Capsule Wardrobe?” anyways? In basic terms, a capsule wardrobe is a minimalist approach to building a wardrobe + closet full of basic style pieces that can mixed + match together effortlessly. A Capsule Wardrobe can create a lot of different outfit choices for any occasion. And, there are many benefits to creating a Capsule Wardrobe for yourself.
First, it is cost effective. Because you stick to the basics that never go out of style so you’re not loading your closet with trendy pieces each season that are out of style or irrelevant by the next season, never to be worn again. Second, it is an effortless + efficient approach to fashion. Because each piece is meant to be a staple that mixes and matches with others. If you’re always in a hurry or not great a pulling outfits together (both, myself) then this is a quick + easy way to look pull together. Lastly, a Capsule Wardrobe is timeless. You’re able to invest in pieces that are meant to last a long time. Sure, the trends will come and go but you’ll be able to make tweaks and edits accordingly. Then, you can bridge the gaps so that you’re always relevant and confident in your own clothes.

To begin our Style Edit, we started off with a fun Zoom call to go over my style and what exactly I was looking for. I was able to provide her with a link to my Classic Style board on Pinterest that I’ve built over the years of things I love. I also sent over a private Personal Branding board I created just for the project. We talked through brands I love, capsule wardrobe brands and pricing too. That ways she could get a good idea of what I needed and where I was comfortable already. Leigh and her team got to work quickly and came back with SO many great options for me!
Capsule Wardrobe Planner + Styling Process
During our call we talked through different events I was specifically needing outfits for. She came back with six detailed looks, styled from head to toe for all the scenarios I might encounter being an entrepreneur + mom. My list of events included wardrobe for photoshoots + headshots, tradeshows, everyday and beyond. The “Looks To Try” helped me push the envelope a a little bit in terms of really carving our my personal style. I honestly loved them all. I told her some of my signature style staples, like hats, and she worked them in effortlessly. Leigh provided me with a huge shopping mood board with a ton of specific clothing options. From pants and shirts to dresses, shoes and even accessories like shoes + jewelry. All of these pieces looked great together, were cohesive to my personal style and helped me create the style I was wanting.
Capsule Style Checklist
I love that the items Leigh presented to me all stayed within my “capsule” realm. But they still worked in pieces that I wouldn’t have otherwise chosen. I also loved that she has pieces with more patterns, textures and shapes. Leigh put them all together in a way that seems contemporary and on trend while still being basics. Having a capsule wardrobe checklist really helped me see what I needed to refresh and what I could add to make old pieces feel like new again. Creating a capsule wardrobe for women is not hard. You can build a minimalist wardrobe of your very own!
