My Favorite Cranberry Recipes for Fall

Fresh cranberries are one of my favorite signs that fall has arrived. As soon as those first bags appear at the grocery store, I always toss a few into my cart. They’re tart, bright and beautiful, and there are so many more ways to use them than just the traditional bowl of cranberry sauce at Thanksgiving.

I’ve gathered some of my favorite fall cranberry recipes here in one place, from homemade cranberry sauce and old-fashioned baked cranberries to cranberry hand pies, sugared cranberries and even a favorite way to use them with Thanksgiving leftovers. If you have a bag of fresh cranberries and aren’t quite sure what to make with them, this is a good place to start.

Cranberry Recipes for Thanksgiving

Cranberries and Thanksgiving just go together, but you certainly don’t have to make the same cranberry sauce every year. If you’re planning your Thanksgiving menu, my homemade cranberry sauce is the traditional choice, while the old-fashioned baked cranberries are a wonderful alternative if you want something with more whole-berry texture.

And don’t forget about the day after Thanksgiving. Cranberries are especially good paired with leftover turkey, which is why I always think it’s worth making enough to have a little left in the refrigerator.

What Can I Make with Fresh Cranberries?

Fresh cranberries can be used for so much more than cranberry sauce. You can bake them into pies and breads, roast them in the oven, simmer them into sauces, add them to breakfast recipes or turn them into beautiful sugared cranberries for the holidays.

Because fresh cranberries are naturally quite tart, most recipes pair them with something sweet. Orange is another classic pairing and one you’ll find in several of my favorite cranberry recipes.

Can I Use Frozen Cranberries Instead of Fresh?

For many cranberry recipes, frozen cranberries can be substituted for fresh cranberries, although the texture may be a little softer once they’re cooked. Recipes like cranberry sauce are particularly forgiving.

For recipes where you want the cranberries to retain more of their shape, such as my baked cranberries, I prefer using fresh when they’re available.

When Are Fresh Cranberries in Season?

Fresh cranberries are a distinctly fall ingredient, which is one reason I look forward to them every year. I start watching for them in the grocery store as we move into the fall and holiday season and usually pick up an extra bag or two while they’re readily available.

If you love cooking seasonally, they’re one of those ingredients worth taking advantage of while they’re here.

I hope you enjoyed this roundup of ways to enjoy cranberries this fall. They are such a tasty ingredient that can fit into so many recipes. Let me know how you like to use cranberries in the comments below.
