It’s #nationalpieday and I am so thrilled to launch a special little product we’ve been working on and keeping a secret for several months now – our Ceramic Pie Birds!
These sweet little porcelain birds are handmade for us by Atlanta maker Honeycomb Studio, as part of our Southern Artisan Collection and are truly the perfect gift for any baker or pie lover.
The purpose of a pie bird is to vent a pie that may hold more liquid than others, such as a fruit or meat pie. They act as a little steam chimney for pushing out the excess moisture your pie may hold while baking, preventing too much liquid within and a soggy pie crust along the bottom of your pie. They can also be used to hold up your pie crust so it doesn’t sag in the middle when you have an upper crust. And of course, they make a beautiful presentation when finished with the little bird peaking out of the top of your gorgeous pie.
Since it’s #nationalpieday I thought it would be fun to do a little Pie Poll to see what the favorite pie is out there, and to celebrate some of my other favorite staples for all you pie lovers out there! Oh, and just in case you are feeling inspired, don’t forget to check out my post about making the perfect pie crust or recipe for bourbon pecan pie as part of the Southern Kitchen Bucket List.
