One of my favorite things about the holidays is getting to pull out my decorations and get the family together to make our home feel like Christmas.

Growing up we always had an artificial tree (thanks Mom) and now being a mom and home keeper myself I totally see why. Nonetheless, I promise to always have a real tree in my home because I truly cannot get enough of the look and smell of fresh fir in my home.

I love to incorporate crazy amounts of greenery in my holiday decor with pops of red here and there, the only problem is sometimes the garland from the store just looks so worn out. So I’m sharing a few tips for sprucing up your store-bought garland with some fresh elements from the great outdoors.

This week I decided to pull some herbs from my garden to spruce up my greens. It was so easy, cheap and fun to do. I used magnolia, boxwood, rosemary and holly from my yard, taking little clippings here and there of things that are always in season and tend to be more hearty so they’ll last most of the season.

Any greenery or herbs growing in your yard would be great for this project, and there are so many others you can pull in like fresh cedar, ligustrum and other non-traditional holiday sprigs that really come alive when paired with your standard strand of garland.

Yet another reason why an herb garden is so useful, far beyond the spring season. My rosemary plants are huge, fragrant and gorgeous all year long here in Georgia and I find so many uses for the springs – from wrapping presents to herbed butter and beyond . There really are so many ways you can use your garden all year long.

I cut a few springs from each plant and just wove them into the garland, securing with a little floral wire as needed. It turned the boring, lifeless store-bought garland into a beautiful decoration and really filled out the sash. This project will also get your house smelling great and be sure to put you in the holiday spirit.
