Classic French Toast Recipe

The Heart of a Classic French Toast Recipe

A classic french toast recipe is built on simplicity. Eggs, milk, and warm spices come together to create a custard that transforms humble bread into something comforting and nostalgic. What makes it timeless is not complexity but balance. Thick slices soak just enough to stay soft inside while turning golden at the edges in a buttered skillet.

I always think of classic french toast as the kind of breakfast that feels familiar no matter where you are. It is slow, comforting, and rooted in tradition, which is why small details like bread choice and cooking temperature make such a difference.

A Classic French Toast Recipe

French Toast is a weekend breakfast specialty in our home, there is just something so nostalgic about waking up on a lazy weekend morning and having a free moment to make breakfast with the kids. While French Toast is definitely on the sweeter side and we often don’t have bread at the house, it is nice to have every once in a while. I might love it more than the kids!

Best Bread for a Classic French Toast Recipe

One of the most important decisions in a classic french toast recipe is choosing the right bread. Brioche and challah create a soft, rich texture, while a bakery-style white loaf or rustic sourdough offers a slightly heartier bite. Slightly day-old bread works beautifully because it absorbs the custard without becoming soggy.

Thicker slices hold their shape and create that signature balance of fluffy interior and crisp golden exterior that makes classic french toast feel timeless.

French Toast is something everyone loves (at least I think so). I love finding the perfect fluffy bread at my local bakery and turning it into a special breakfast treat. A few tips for making your French Toast extra special and delicious…

First, find a thick cut of bread that is nice and spongey as it will soak up more of the egg mixture and give your Toast a great consistency. Second, go heavy on that egg dip! I like to ensure the crusts are coated and the bread has really soaked up a nice amount of the egg, but not so much as to where it’s falling apart. Third, add some flavor like cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract or even a little citrus zest like orange or lemon to give it an extra layer of flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a classic french toast recipe different from regular french toast?

A classic french toast recipe keeps ingredients simple and focuses on technique. Eggs, milk, cinnamon, and vanilla create a custard that soaks into thick bread before cooking slowly in butter until golden.

Why is my french toast soggy in the middle?

French toast becomes soggy when bread is too thin or soaked too long. Use thick slices and allow excess custard to drip off before placing it in the pan. Cooking over medium heat allows the inside to cook fully without burning the outside.

Can you make classic french toast ahead of time?

Yes. Cook the slices fully and let them cool before storing in the refrigerator. Reheat in a skillet or oven to bring back the crisp edges while keeping the inside soft.
