Some things are far in the making, and this Spring photoshoot is no exception. I’ve kept these photos under wraps since last July {if you can believe that!} and for good reason. I took some truly special people to capture the beauty of the sunlight and new heirloomed linen Collection.

We crammed a lot into this day-long photoshoot, with a prelude of coffee shop planning sessions, style board sketches, and trip to both the farmers market & the wholesale florist. I found a new love of scabiosa in these floral blooms. A swarm of angry hornets and a sting led to a quick location change at the farm, and a 400 lb pig who devoured the vast majority of fresh fruit & raw veggies, and a few of our florals made for a more “simple” look on the final tablescape. But, all in all the final outcome was perfection. Big thanks to the photographic talents of Heidi Geldhauser & the styling {and modeling} by Christina Loucks for making this come to life!

Spring in the South is simply beautiful. It reminds me of brunches, picnics, impromptu backyard barbeques, romantic weddings and light, fragrant cocktails. The simplicity of the heirloomed Collection is meant to capture these special moments.

Garnish & Gather

I had the pleasure of meeting with Emily of Garnish & Gather just yesterday for coffee and I couldn’t wait another moment to share this wonderful company with you!

I already knew I’d be a fan of Emily thanks to the mentions by talented friends Heidi & Ginny, and of course they were right. I love the simple and whimsical design treatments and packaging. And, even more, love the simple concept of G&G. They work with local area farms to source their ingredients, then team up with brilliant chefs to put together delicious recipes, making the most brilliant little meal kit you can imagine.

We’re a busy family and I’d say I have somewhat limited patience, so I much appreciated having everything handy, measured, fresh, local and ready to go without having to think for a minute “what’s for dinner tonight?” The meal we enjoyed last night was Grassfed Ribeye Steak with Muscadine Gastrique, Roasted Potato Wedges and Sauteed Squash. I love squash, my husband & son love steak, and I had never cooked with muscadines before {despite being from the south and having access to bucket loads of them at the farm}. The local farms that brought us our dish were Moore’s Farm, Heritage Farms and Geezers Garden.

The meal was so much fun to prepare, everyone enjoyed it, it was so simple! I will definitely be enjoying another meal again soon, and I think a kit or gift certificate would make a perfect gift to bring over to a new mom.

One of my very favorite things about the Summer is the fresh fruits and vegetables that are oh-so plentiful this time of year.

Watermelon, peaches, corn, tomatoes, beans – you name it. There are so many reasons to love Summer, and this is one of my favorite. The past two days we’ve awoken to a bit cooler weather {and by cooler I mean, not in the 80′s by 5am …} and it’s made me realize that Summer is coming to a sweet end sooner than later.

It made me remember this wonderful farm stand calledĀ Jaemor Farms that we stopped at on our way to rustic North Georgia. I love how this picture makes you feel like you’ve take a step back in time, like it could have been taken yesterday or 40 years ago. In recent years, there has been a flourishing comeback of farms, fruit stands, farmers markets and such. A brand new one just opened in our neighborhood about a month ago and I finally made the walk up last weekend – it was perfect.

So, while I’ll be sad to see my favorite Summer season come to an end, I’ll look forward to the upcoming days of fresh apples, jars of jam and one of my all time favorites – those great boiled peanuts that only a true Southerner can master.

May sound familiar if you’ve perused our Pecan Orchard Pleasantries Full Apron. This apron was inspired by my beau’s Granny, whom I was lucky enough to spend a chilly winter day with in the kitchen over the holidays.

Year after year she spends countless days hand-picking pecans from the picturesque horse pasture at their family farm to stockpile enough to make endless turtles for the holidays. Cracking, cleaning, & bagging the whole pecans are just the beginning. This recipe truly is an heirloom in their family, and one that will be preserved for generations to come.

The secret to the recipe, of course, is the fresh, whole pecans carefully made into crosses on a wide sheet of wax paper, turtle after turtle. For a quart sized Ziploc bagful, you’ll need about 2 bags of Kraft caramels and 6 squares of chocolate almond bark.

Simply “cross” the pecans, melt the caramels in the microwave & carefully (will be hot) pull of a spoonful of caramel & flatten and place onto each pecan cross. Once these are all carameled, melt the chocolate bricks in the microwave and again spoon on a dollop to complete the turtles! Allow them to firm & dry and then divulge in some serious, farm raised perfection!

In my very humble opinion, there are few places in this world more delightful than Serenbe. Located just south of Atlanta, the community was build as an organic farm with green-space galore and the most whimsical little town you could ever imagine.

I am so delighted to share that IceMilk Aprons has partnered with our newest Gourmet Retailer, Harris & Clark – a “thoughtful grocery & food school” located in the heart of the Serenbe community. Founded by Anissa & James Harris, the duo aims to provide a nostalgic & local Southern fare of artisan products within their quaint market space.

From pear butter and pickled peaches, to Farmer D’s organic compost, fabulous loaves of crusty bread, the most beautiful local honey you’ve seen, farm fresh eggs & local cheeses, and of course – IceMilk Aprons. They have so many wonderful cooking school events that are hosted there at Harris & Clark, partnering with local folks to help bring some gourmet learnings & good times.

Spending the late afternoon with Anissa & James was such a wonderful experience and I’m thrilled to be a part of what they have created with their shop. Stay tuned for a special “Heirloom Travel” post on Serenbe, but in the meantime be sure to go out for a visit and explore all there is to love about this little place lost in time.

picture-1In honor of the Masters this week, here is a wonderful and time honored traditional recipe for Pimento Cheese.

Because of my passion for traditions and recipes, an obvious question I posed .. where does this tradition of serving pimento cheese sandwiches at the Masters come from anyways?

The answer is delightful. In true Southern fashion, families in the South generally had to eat what they grew on their own farms – fruits, vegetables, grains. At that, very few Southern farms made their own cheese, and when they did it was white cheese, like ricotta or mozzarella. Yellow cheese was a delicacy for Southerners, and thus generally reserved for the upper class or special occasions.

That being said, they took the precious yellow cheese, added mayonnaise (again, in true Southern fashion) and pimentos which were grown locally across the South to make the fine spread. The Masters, being the epitome of golf and of the elite, began the time-honored tradition of serving the pimento cheese sandwich – which is one of their most popular by far.
